Does Posting More Notes a Day Still Pay Off? I Checked 367,047 of Them.
Every extra note converts worse than the one before it. Your total for the day keeps climbing anyway. Here's the exact point where the math stops being obvious.
You’ve just written your third note of the day. It’s fine, not great. You sit there with the compose box open and ask the question every Substack creator eventually asks themselves: is a fourth note actually going to add anything, or am I just adding noise to my own feed?
I’ve told readers of this newsletter that 2 to 3 notes a day is the sweet spot. I said it in at least two prior articles. I believed it because it felt right, not because I’d checked it. Other creators swear by 10 a day and treat anyone posting less as under-committed. Nobody I’ve read has actually opened the data and measured what a fourth, eighth, or twelfth note in the same day is worth, compared to the first.
So I pulled it.
What I pulled
367,047 Notes from 1,406 authors tracked in WriteStack’s analytics layer, posted between October 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026. Every Note carries its exact position in that author’s posting order for the day (their first note, second note, third, and so on) and how many free subscribers it converted, tracked through WriteStack’s attribution system. Subscriber and click totals are private, per-author figures, so every number in this article is an aggregate across the full author pool. No individual creator’s numbers appear below.
One more number before the findings. 72% of all posting days in this dataset land at 1 to 3 notes. Another 21.7% land at 4 to 7. Only 6.3% of days cross into 8 or more. Most creators, whether they've thought it through or not, are already behaving like the "2 to 3 is the sweet spot" line I wrote is true. The question this article actually answers is whether that instinct is correct, or whether it's just where most people's energy happens to run out.
Finding 1: Your Fourth Note Is Not What You’d Expect
For every author-day, I ranked their Notes in posting order and averaged free subscribers gained by rank. The pattern is not subtle, and it does not land where the “2 to 3 is the sweet spot” line would predict.
